Train within one year

You must show training in the safe use of a pistol within one year of your renewal application. Your old certificate won't count.

Apply in the 90-day window

You can turn in your renewal no earlier than 90 days before the expiration date on your permit.

Fee up to $75

The sheriff sets the renewal fee, which can't be more than $75. Renewing within 30 days after expiration adds a $10 late fee.

Early costs you nothing

Your renewal permit starts on the expiration date of your old one, so renewing early doesn't cut your five years short.

If Your Permit Already Expired

Permits expire at midnight on the expiration date printed on the card. The date is written as YYYYMMDD, so 20270315 means March 15, 2027.

Within 30 days after expiration, you can still renew by paying the extra $10 late fee. During that time your old permit is not valid, and you can't carry until your renewal permit is issued. After 30 days, you can no longer renew and have to apply for a new permit, which can cost up to $100.

A Simple Renewal Timeline

Take the class

Any time in the 12 months before you plan to apply. Taking it a few months before your permit expires keeps things simple.

Turn in your packet

Starting 90 days before expiration, go in person to the sheriff in the county where you live. Non-residents can use any Minnesota sheriff.

Get your new card

The sheriff has 30 days to process the application. Your new permit picks up where the old one ends.

What Goes in Your Renewal Packet

  • The BCA application (PDF), signed and dated, with the renewal box checked.
  • A copy of your new training certificate.
  • A copy of your photo ID: a current driver's license, state ID card or passport photo page. Permanent residents also need their I-551 or I-151 card.
  • The renewal fee, up to $75. Ask your sheriff which payment types they take.

Renewal Questions

How early can I renew my Minnesota permit to carry?

No earlier than 90 days before the expiration date on your permit. Your new permit starts on your old expiration date, so applying early doesn't shorten it. See Minn. Stat. 624.714, subd. 7.

Do I have to take the class again to renew?

Yes. You need training from a certified instructor within one year of your renewal application, the same as a new permit.

What if my permit expired last week?

If you are within 30 days after expiration, you can still renew by adding a $10 late fee. You can't carry until the renewal is issued. After 30 days, you have to apply for a new permit.

How much does it cost to renew?

My class is $80, range fees included. The sheriff's renewal fee can't be more than $75, plus $10 if you renew late within the 30-day window.
