What the Class Covers

Minnesota law says the training has to cover pistol fundamentals, a live-fire qualification and the legal side of carry and self-defense. The class covers these topics.

  • Personal Protection Plans
  • Handgun Basics and Selection
  • Handgun Fundamentals
  • Self-Defense Laws, including the Use of Lethal Force
  • The Aftermath
  • Minnesota Carry Laws
  • Gear Selection
  • Range Qualification

After Class: Applying in Goodhue County

Kenyon is in Goodhue County, so you apply with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office. Here's what their firearms page says today:

  • Apply in person in Red Wing. Submit your application at the Goodhue County Law Enforcement Center, 430 West 6th Street, Red Wing.
  • What to bring. The completed, signed and dated permit to carry application (PDF), a photocopy of your training certificate and a photocopy of your driver's license, state ID or passport photo page.
  • Fees for Minnesota residents. $80 for a new permit and $80 for a renewal. Cash, check, credit card or money order.
  • Renewal timing. You can apply to renew no earlier than 90 days before your permit expires.

Your training certificate needs to be dated within one year of your application, and the sheriff has 30 days to issue or deny the permit.

Nervous About Your First Class?

Most of my students have never taken a class like this. You don't need to own a gun or have shot one before.

"Was very nervous going into the class. Chris was a great instructor who made the class flow smoothly and also made it fun. Would definitely recommend it."

Katie, Precision Plus student
